Super Bowl mobile marketing finds groove before and after game

Numerous brands delivered well-crafted mobile strategies capitalizing on the excitement both before and after the Super Bowl, overshadowing any efforts to drive engagement during the popular live event.

From mobile-driven giveaways to fun digital scavenger hunts and attention-grabbing content, brands such as Budweiser, Coca-Cola and Jack in the Box, among others, bet heavily on mobile-driven programs  pre- and post-game to extend the life of their significant investments in airtime during the Super Bowl. While some reports suggesting social traffic was down during the Super Bowl this year, there was also a focus on driving meaningful brand awareness and activation via second-screen engagements during the game.

"Mobile as a major channel is somewhat of a godsend to brands looking to get involved in the Super Bowl,” said Ted Dhanik, CEO of engage:BDR.  “Super Bowl TV spots are extremely limited and coveted inventory - as such, they have hugely high barriers to entry and are reserved for the big players.

“However, mobile traffic during the big game is a significant opportunity- whether people are at home, at a bar, or at a party, most of them have their phones on them, and many are engaging in social media commentary, looking up stats, or just browsing,” he said.

Ineffective mobile usage, ROI measurements are marketers’ downfalls: Forrester

Marketers’ failure to accurately invest in mobile channels with appropriate budgets has resulted in a struggle to measure return on investment, meaning that brands must fully integrate mobile with their marketing strategies this year, according to a report from Forrester Research.

The research firm’s latest report identifies 2016 mobile marketing and app trends, focusing on how brands can become key differentiators in their respective industries by serving mobile moments to consumers in an effort to revamp the customer experience. Many companies underinvested in mobile last year, suggesting that the leaders of the pack – who maintain strong mobile budgets – will effectively measure the channel’s return on investment in 2016.

“Mobile is the most disruptive change in consumer behavior in years,” said Thomas Husson, vice president and principal analyst of marketing and strategy at Forrester Research. “Marketers know this and they keep saying mobile is strategic.

“However, reality is that they struggle measuring ROI of mobile because they do not clearly articulate how mobile can serve their marketing objectives and because they don't measure the right metrics.”

Super Bowl advertisers must advance their mobile game with streaming

The National Football League is furthering its content on streaming platforms, cognizant of the growing demand for standalone viewing services on mobile devices, meaning advertisers must adapt their Super Bowl strategies to include these platforms or risk being left behind.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl and to accommodate the shift in consumer viewing habits, the NFL has taken to mobile to fully immerse its fans, and advertisers should do the same. Viewers on the multitude of NFL digital properties will have access to an array of exclusive content, interactive voting, social media integration and ad extras, which means marketers need to get personal to keep up with the new intimate viewing experience.

“The NFL has always looked to put our content out in as many ways as possible to serve our fans,” said Alex Riethmiller, spokeswoman at NFL Media. “As media consumption habits have changed, with more video being consumed on digital platforms, it was a natural for us to stream the Super Bowl.

“As everyone in the media industry is seeing, mobile leads all other digital platforms when it comes to content consumption, and typically by a large margin,” she said. “We see more traffic to NFL Mobile on an NFL Sunday than to NFL.com.

“And so, whether it is a piece of breaking news, a fantasy update, a highlight clip or a live stream of Super Bowl 50, mobile is at the center of our focus for our digital efforts.”
