Kohl’s exec says beacons are surefire bet for greater personalization

NEW YORK – A Kohl’s executive at the NRF 104th Annual Convention & Expo said the retailer has stepped up the pace of innovation and while not everything will pan out, beacons are a surefire bet.

At the “From Moments to Journey: Make each one Matter” session during the NRF 104th Annual Convention & Expo, a Kohl’s executive discussed the importance of offering a seamless, simplified checkout process on mobile and online and channels, as well as taking all steps to ensure a positive customer experience. After listening to customer feedback and attempting to stay competitive in the ever-changing digital space, Kohl’s recently launched a transactional redesign for its mobile checkout process and turned to beacon technology in the hopes of sending more personalized offers to guests in-store.

“We have rolled out beacons in 22 stores,” said Ratnakar Lavu, executive vice president and digital head of Kohl’s, San Francisco. “We’re testing it out; some experiences work, some don’t.

GE exec: Virtual reality play stirs passion about science, tech

NEW YORK – A General Electric executive at Mobile Marketer’s Mobile First Look: Strategy 2015 conference said the conglomerate is leveraging its applications of virtual reality and other mobile technology to get consumers excited about science and technology.

GE’s aim is to make the public aware that it is not just a maker of light bulbs but also produces jet engines and other technology products.

“Mobile is another great way for us to ignite passion around science and technology and open the doors of GE,” said Katrina Craigwell, GE’s director of global content and programming.

“For us, mobile has been about where’s the audience going, what are the new platforms, the new channels and also the new technologies that are capturing the audience’s attentio

On the sleeve

The big mobile news at this year’s International Consumer Electronics Store included wearables, robotics and the connected world, but the array of gadgets, systems and ideas for living better are a cue for forward-looking mobile experts to ramp up their efforts to reach tech-savvy consumers on mobile (see story).

For example, Hyundai demonstrated its Blue Link smartwatch application with voice recognition at CES, making Hyundai the latest automaker to leverage a wearable for features such as remote starting, locking and unlocking doors and remote car-finding.

The app allows the activating of the voice function by pushing the microphone icon on an Android watch to let the driver execute commands such as "Start my car," "Lock my car" or "Find my car."

Wearables are expected to be integrated with the bulk of vehicles shipping in the next five years, either directly or via a smartphone, according to research (see story).

According to Mr. Malmad and Mindshare, connecting on wearables is not about deploying a banner, running a pre roll or intrusion but instead should aim to achieve creating an additive experience, insight that can be beneficial and utility. Reports support the rise of wearables and 2015 will show more consumers purchasing these devices.

Wearables set to expand influence of push notifications: Mindshare exec

NEW YORK – A Mindshare executive at Mobile Marketer’s Mobile FirstLook: Strategy 2015 conference said the rise in popularity of wearables creates an opportunity for marketers to send targeted and informative push notifications that will form loyal users.

During the “Wearables and What 2015 Will Bring” session, the executive discussed recent efforts in the wearable space and how they might be useful for marketers to consider. Targeted push notifications that are delivered to consumers via their wearable devices are more likely to hold users’ attention.

“The wearable device compliments mobile devices,” said Jeff Malmad, managing director of Mindshare. “It’s also capturing a lot of information.

“We’re moving from a controlled world to an unleashed world,” he said. “We’ve moved from desktop to spending more time on mobile devices, and mobile traffic has surpassed desktop Internet traffic.

“Thanks to companies like Fitbit, Jawbone, Polar, we are now getting primed for the release of Apple Watch, which is why we call 2015 the year of the wearables. It will become much more mainstream.”

Mindshare is a marketing company, and its clients range from Ford to Lionsgate to Nike.

December rebound

Open rates on mobile could also rebound in December

“It's unlikely that the decline will continue through December,” Mr. Sather said. “Consumers are more likely to use multiple devices for online activities.

“As consumers are in the mood to shop this quarter, we'll see emails being opened on mobile devices increase through right before Christmas,” he said.

“Also, people are more likely to start interactions, like opening and reading email, on mobile phones during this time of year as people head home for the holidays, or are just out and about shopping.”

For marketers, the numbers underscore the importance of understanding the preferences of a brand’s target audience as consumers appear to be changing their behavior depending upon whom they are interacting with.

Synching mobile payments and loyalty programs

Mobile payments adoption is going to jump significantly, based on momentum from the recent Apple Pay launch, increasing penetration of other NFC-enabled smartphones and retailer coalitions such as

MCX – notable for the planned launch of CurrentC in 2015.

No matter how market share gets divvied up, consumers will use their phones and wearables to pay.

That is because we are all in the habit of taking these devices wherever we go, they are just as secure and, ultimately, they are more convenient.

Beacons emerge

Beacons were the big story in 2014 as retailers, sports stadiums, transportation centers and municipalities looked to the low-cost, low-energy Bluetooth-enabled technology to enhance the on-site experience for consumers. Spurred by the potential of Apple’s iBeacon, beacons in general moved from a promising, lightly tested tool to a strategy that can make a significant difference in engagement, if not in-store sales, while seamlessly bridging physical and online experiences.

Beacons detect nearby smartphones and send them ads, coupons or supplementary product information. They can also be used as point-of-sale systems and to collect information on consumers — particularly on how consumers maneuver through stores.

Reflecting the prevailing trend and consumers’ growing openness to beacon-generated mobile ads, Macy’s announced that 4,000 beacons would be coming to all its department stores..

“While marketers and AdTech companies continue experimenting and investing in new types of mobile ad units, programmatic, native ads, and mobile conversion ads, apart from beacons, nothing else that launched in 2014 clearly demonstrated a fundamental paradigm shift in mobile marketing strategy,” said Aaron McLean, partner and senior vice president for marketing and strategic partnerships with Meg.

However, while beacons have a lot going for them, they do represent challenges such as poor device reach, with many consumers not enabling Bluetooth on their phones that do have it. Additionally, consumers need to have an app that is receptive to beacon messages and to give that app permission to use location and permission to send push notifications.

In the end, a mix of complementary technologies – including audio, Bluetooth BLE, Wi-Fi, NFC and others - may be used in tandem to create a comprehensive in-store experience.

5 mobile developments that mattered in 2014

Beacons’ emergence as a powerful engagement tool topped the list of most important mobile marketing developments in 2014, a year marked by more consumers than ever embracing smartphones and tablets for everyday activities.

Also prominent in the just-completed year were increasingly personal marketing campaigns, adaptive-designed Web mobile sites, a social media resurgence, video’s growing use and the general public’s continuing mobile-mind shift.

"The year of mobile has finally concluded its multi-year reign and transitioned into a truly cross-device effort,” said Chris Hansen, president of Netmining. “We are seeing mobile marketing beginning to live up to its full potential with everything from cross-device remarketing campaigns to sequential creative – leveraging audience data beyond the siloed walls of a given channel.”

Here’s a look at the most important mobile-marketing events of 2014, and how they undergirded mobile’s reshaping of the marketing and retail landscape, part of the quest to shape messages that generate desire, shape perceptions, build trust and ultimately lead to sales.
