Unique strategies

Return Path’s data shows that last month, mobile opens surged on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, when consumers were at home sorting through the first wave of email offers from retailers.

However, on Cyber Monday, email opens surged on desktops as consumers opened their inboxes at the office.

The takeaway for marketers is that, increasingly, mobile does not necessarily mean that users are on the go. Instead, consumers are engage with mobile when they are not at work, meaning marketers need to develop unique timing and tone strategies for mobile email campaigns likely to be reaching people at home.

Another finding is the ongoing importance of iPads for email marketers.

While much has been of the fact that iPad sales are declining, they still make up more than 20 percent of the share of opens on iOS devices.

There are also differences in mobile engagement rates by country. In Britain, 62 percent of emails are opened on mobile while in the United States, just 48 percent are opened on mobile. In Australia, the rate is 47 percent, Canada 40 percent, France 36 percent, Germany 35 percent and Brazil 33 percent.

“Marketers need to be prepared for consumer interactions, specifically to email, across multiple devices and platforms from a design and usability standpoint,” Mr. Sather said.

Retail email

Mobile usage reached 50 percent of all email opens for the first time in November 2013 and continued to dominate throughout last year’s holiday season.

Mobile usage then started to decline in January of this year and reached it lowest point in May.

However, mobile email open rates are higher in some verticals than others.

Consumers opened 60 percent of emails from apparel retailers from a mobile device.

In banking, the rate was 51 percent, finance 41 percent, food and beverage 38 percent, media and entertainment 20 percent and travel 30 percent.

Why are mobile email open rates declining?

Mobile email opens appear to be plateauing with less than half of emails opened on a mobile device in November, down from last year when the rate topped 50 percent, according to new data from Return Path.

The findings suggest that consumers are continuing to engage in multi-screen use of email and not necessarily embracing mobile exclusively to read emails. The key takeaway for email marketers is that they need to continue to create campaigns for a multitude of devices.

“The decline in mobile email open rates year-over-year by 1 percent is relatively insignificant,” said Tom Sather, senior director of email research at Return Path. “This is the first year where we didn't see month-over-month increases in mobile email consumption.

“This signals that mobile usage has perhaps reached a mature stage,” he said. “U.S. smartphone penetration is currently at 72 percent so we're seeing signs of saturation, and mobile and email-on-mobile is experiencing a plateau as opposed to a decline.”

4 trends developing in content marketing in 2015

Trend #4: Hispanic content

Brands have been slow to create branded content for the Hispanic market, yet data consistently demonstrates that Hispanics are some of the most active in digital engagement (see Forrester report).

The trend will be to create bicultural content that has broader impact than Hispanic-only content, and target towards Latinas who, according to Alma, hold disproportionate influence on buying decisions in Hispanic households.

Publishers can take advantage of this shift by tapping into brand spend on content marketing distribution.

According to OneSpot, a content marketing software vendor, brands spend 30 percent of their content marketing budgets on distribution, and 59 percent of brands say they intend to increase this over the next year.

PUBLISHERS HAVE experience in creating sponsored page experiences, but tapping into content marketing requires delivering audience scale to a destination site and adding more consumer insights post-campaign. These are two areas on which publishers have typically not focused.

While some publishers are building out these capabilities themselves, most are working with technology vendors such as acuteIQ that help publishers increase ad sales from content marketing.

Next year will represent a period when the value of content marketing becomes more measurable and targeted. This represents an opportunity for brands to get better ROI from their investment and an opportunity for publishers to tap into a new form of advertising revenue.

4 trends developing in content marketing in 2015

Trend #3: Multiscreen story-telling

Most content is nowadays designed for consumption online. However, users are spending more time on mobile devices.

Marketing research from YuMe has demonstrated that branded content viewed across multiple screens increases awareness and engagement.

Brands will start to create content optimized for mobile usage – for example, shorter-form, mobile

Web-based – and create story arcs that are designed to engage across online, mobile and connected television devices. A good example of this is a campaign by Ford Europe for its heated windshield product.

4 trends developing in content marketing in 2015

Trend #2: Brand-safe experiences

Brands are increasingly wary of traditional media advertising where their content was placed on sites that promised premium exposure, but too often saw their content distributed across sites with poor ad visibility or outright click-fraud.

As brands have started to invest in long-form video content, they have begun either hosting it on their own site (see The North Face) or placing it on the sites of premium publishers (see Alliance Wake).

This is part of a general trend away from placing content on social media sites, such as YouTube, which offer brands no opportunity to own their audience data or retarget the audience without paying advertising fees.

4 trends developing in content marketing in 2015

Trend #1: Post-viral world

According to TubeMogul, 53 percent of all videos have less than 500 views. The sooner everyone realizes that not all videos will go viral, the quicker we can all move on to thinking what value can be obtained from making great content.

A recent report by the Content Marketing Institute mentioned that only 48 percent of companies have a documented content strategy and only 21 percent succeed in tracking ROI.

Therefore, we expect brands to start to better measure the value of content marketing and consider it a great tool to obtain audience insights on their customers.

According to the Content Marketing Institute, 93 percent of business-to-business marketers are using content marketing and 42 percent believe that their programs are effective.
Brands have continued to report good results from content marketing.

For example, Mark Yolton, vice president of digital at Cisco Systems, said, “Our video and webcast content in Q3 2014 generated about 1,200 net new names ... and $13 million in sales-qualified leads.”

As we look ahead into 2015, what are some of the trends we should see developing?

Dove, Kohl’s generate the most love on social media

Unilever personal care brand Dove and retailer Kohl’s landed at the top of social media relationship platform Hootsuite’s monthly Love List acknowledging the brands that saw the most love on social media in October.

The Love List ranks more than 450 top worldwide brands and uses data from Hootsuite’s social monitoring, listening and advanced analytics system to sort through hundreds of millions of social media posts. October’s list also includes Friskies, Avon, The CW and TripAdvisor in its top ten.

“When determining success on social media, most brands get caught up simply tallying the standard signifiers of engagement — likes, retweets, etc.,” said Mark Pascarella, general manager of Hootsuite Analytics, Cambridge, Mass. “But ‘like’ isn’t love, and true brand health is based on more than success in one social metric or sheer popularity.

“We wanted to create a way for brands to measure and compare the sentiment of their audience’s conversation about their brand, to better facilitate engagement and help them to improve their content strategy.”

Lack of TV-mobile ad integration will cost brands as holiday shopping begins

Marketers are unsure how to integrate television and mobile to engage multitasking consumers, a deficiency that could result in missed purchasing opportunities as the crucial holiday selling season ramps up.

Of 100 different U.S. TV advertisers studied in September by cross-screen advertising company wywy, just one in five showed a clearly visible product on the homepage of its Web site and just 17 percent prominently displayed the product on the mobile version of the homepage. With more consumers simultaneously consuming TV and mobile content, marketers who fail to take an omni-channel marketing approach risk harming holiday sales.

“The TV advertisers know that there is a massive change going on,” said Andreas Schroeter, wywy co-founder and COO. “Multi-tasking is the new normal, shopping on a mobile device the norm.

“Advertisers shouldn’t see TV, mobile and online as separate,” he said. Integrating campaigns is necessary. But they are unsure about how to respond to that change.”

“Advertisers need seamless story-telling,” Mr. Schroeter said. “Show the product on mobile devices that is advertised on TV. Then measure impact on your website KPIs. Then optimize your TV campaigns accordingly.”

What marketers need to know about the brewing social login battle

Facebook, Twitter and Google are jockeying for dominance in social logins, which has implications for audience insights and for targeting social ad campaigns.

Social logins can be an important tool for mobile marketers, but few creative uses exist, such as KLM’s Meet and Seat. Building trust with consumers is key to using social logins effectively but with offerings from Google, Twitter and Facebook continuing to evolve as they look to gain dominance here, this could give pause to those who are already not sure about how to proceed.

“Marketers should take a keen interest on the social login battleground,” said Amy Gale, associate planning director at Isobar US.

“The current vying for dominance in social logins is of benefit to brands - assuming one company succeeds,” she said. “A monopoly within social login formats works in a marketers favor.

“One source of social login data provides marketing teams with a more holistic view of their audience, which is inherently more actionable.”

Mobile gap becomes insurmountable for some businesses: Forrester

Companies will spend $189 billion in 2017 to enable mobile services, fueling a technology and spending arms race that will leave many companies vulnerable, according to Forrester Research.

Forrester revealed its predictions for how mobile will impact businesses and marketers next year, with the upshot that the gap between businesses who truly get mobile and laggards will become more visible next year and insurmountable for some. Other key predictions include that app downloads will level off and either Facebook, Apple or Google will likely introduce a marketplace for branded content.

“I think most brands agreed in 2014 that mobile is strategic but when it comes to integrating mobility into their marketing strategy, few are really measuring all the business implications,” said Thomas Husson, Paris-based vice president and principal analyst of the marketing and strategy client group at Forrester as well as one of authors of the reports.

“In 2015, we expect the gap to increase between brands who will see mobile as just another channel and the leaders who will invest in re-engineering their business to deliver mobile moments,” he said.

“The most surprising element is probably that mobile marketing goes so much beyond marketing: it is actually a catalyst for transformation and requires a bridge with business technology.”

Days of mass-marketing winding down

“Selfie,” “my favorites,” “wish list,” “recommended for you,” “items you may like” – all popular words and phrases defining the state of today’s consumers, signaling to marketers that it is time to say goodbye to the days of mass-marketing and hello to one-on-one conversations.

We are now in the “all about me” era in which well-informed and proactive customers demand personalization from brands across all touch-points. In fact, this expectation for marketers will only increase as we head into 2015 with more tools at our disposal.

Recent studies have even revealed that 40 percent of consumers are more likely to buy from retailers who personalize according to their preferences.

Additionally, 59 percent of customers believe it is easier to find the items that they are looking for when brands personalize the experience and 39 percent tend to buy more if retailers offer recommendations based on their past purchases.

While consumers are demanding more control, marketers are using innovative strategies to collect customer data to deliver on a personalized brand experience.

The following highlights approaches that some marketers are using to gain customer insights to fuel this effort.

New leaders helm Women in Wireless as growth agenda is set

New leadership takes charge of Women in Wireless, a 10,000-member nonprofit organization that seeks to empower and develop women leaders in mobile and digital media.

Aurelie Guerrieri, founder/CEO of boutique online and mobile consultancy Akila One, and Emily McInerney, director of marketing at mobile app-tech and monetization specialist Tapjoy, have been elected co-presidents of Women in Wireless. They succeed Diana Epstein, senior account executive at cross-device targeting and attribution specialist Drawbridge, and Kristine van Dillen Newman, vice president for global accounts at mobile marketing firm Soli.

“We are taking the reins at a crucial time for Women in Wireless,” Ms. Guerrieri said. “The organization has grown extraordinarily rapidly from a seed to a real structure that is now ready to deepen and expand its impact on women in the mobile and digital space worldwide.”
Spurring growth seems to be the dominant theme for the new leaders.

“Three years ago, Women in Wireless was a 500-member upstart,” Ms. McInerney said. “Today, we have 10,000 members and nine active chapters in the U.S. and abroad. I feel really proud to have contributed to such an amazing expansion.

“This year, under Kristine Newman's and Diana Epstein's leadership, we have also achieved financial stability, and have rolled out many processed and toolkits that will serve as foundation as we further scale,” she said.
